FOMO: Fear of missing out.

As Wikipedia says it “Fear of missing out or FOMO is a form of social anxiety, whereby one is compulsively concerned that one might miss an opportunity for social interaction, a novel experience, profitable investment or other satisfying event. The fear is especially associated with modern technologies such as mobile phones and social networking services such as Facebook and Twitter, which provide constant opportunity for comparison of one’s status. Through an increased reliance on the Internet, a psychological dependence to being online has developed and results in anxiety when one feels disconnected, thereby leading to a fear of missing out.”

Trust me, most of us suffer from this and would admit to it as well. Life was fine even when we were not doing all this, when we had more time to do stuff that we liked. Is it really that important to pick up your phone every time it beeps to check social media updates, emails, whatsapp messages etc. What would happen if you miss on a photo updated by your friend, do not share a like or a comment.

Come to think of it, what does one achieve by doing that. Yes, being socially connected is nice and is healthy but not at the cost of your precious time, which you should spend with your self, to pursue your hobbies, to read, to write or to play with your kids or chat with your wife or go for a run. Remember, time is finite, life is finite. You have the choice.

FOMO is very much a threat and all of us suffer from the same, me included,(the ones who are connected with 3G connections or WiFi at home).
Spend a day without these and see you would have so much time to do what you want, what you like. Don’t let this snatch away your time.
